Arunachal
Pradesh earlier known as the North East Frontier Agency, is a veritable
treasure house that would tempt a specialist in any discipline.
The sociologist, the archaeologist, the biologist, the nature lover,
the anthropologist, the holiday maker and the administrator. Entry
into Arunachal Pradesh was regulated by an Inner Line Permit System
but now the state encourages and invites tourists to relax in its
picturesque hills and dales and to enjoy its salubrious climate
and meet its simple and hospitable people, with their glorious heritage
of arts and crafts and colourful festivals that reflect their ancient
faiths in the inexorable power of Nature.
A visitor has a rich variety of options to prepare his schedule
of tour. There are places of workship and pilgrimage such as Parasuramkund
and the Tawang Monastery, the sites of archeological excavations
like Malinithan and Itanagar, the serence beauty of lakes such as
the Ganga Lake or the Sela Lake or the numerous variations of scenic
beauty of the snowclad silver mountain peaks and lush green meadows
where thousands of species of flowers and herbs prosper. In addition,
the state also offers opportunities for sports such as angling,
boating, rafting, trekking and hiking. Besides there are a number

ITANAGAR HILL STATION
Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, is the northernmost
state and has been identified with Mayapur, the capital of the 11th
century Jitri dynasty. Dawn first illuminates Arunachal's border
with China, and many of the river Brahmaputra's tributaries begin
their journey from its densely forested mountains. The people of
Arunachal are the greatest attraction of this remote and beautiful
land.
In Itanagar, the visitor meets the Nishi warriors wearing their
hornbill caps and carrying bear skin bags and oyjo knives in monkey
skin scabbards. 750 metres high, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh,
which includes Naharlagun, offers a handicraft centre with a wide
range of shawls, carpets and other tribal handicrafts a Buddhist
Temple, the Ganga Lake set in a green forest, the State Museum,
a Polo Park and its Botanical Garden. The Itafort and Emporium are
worth seeing.
Other Places to see around Itanagar are Tawang, Tipi, Malinithan,
Tezu, Namdapha, Ziro, adn Bomdila. Also visit the Buddhist monasteries,
Craft Centre and local festivals and dances. Good trekking, hiking
and picnic spots are available.
How To Get There
By Air : The most convenient point of entry by air is Tezpur. There
are daily flights by Indian Airlines to Tezpur from Kolkata.
By Rail : The nearest convenient railhead is North Lakhimpur in
Assam, 60km from Itanagar. Bus services ply regularly.
By Road : Itanagar is connected by road to the other state capitals
in the north east, Guwahati 381km, Shillong 481km, Agartala 980km,
Aizawl 901km, Kohima 350km, Imphal 495km and Kolkata 1539km. Bus
services to Itanagar Bomdila are well organised.
Accommodation
Hotel Embassy, Hotel Donyi Polo Ashok, Hotel Arun Subansiri, Hotel
Bomdila. In addition to the above there are Government tourist lodges,
circuit houses and guest houses. Reservations may be made well in
advance for the Inspection Bungalow and Field Hostel.
